In order to enroll in CSE 145, we ask that students submit an application (the procedure is explained below). Note that the initial online enrollment is very limited on purpose. However, if the class is full, do not worry and put yourself on the waitlist. We ask that everyone who wants to take the class, whether you were able to enroll or ended up being waitlisted, complete this application. We will use this application to determine who will be able to enroll once the quarter starts. In the end, our goal is to have around 20 students in the class. Our main idea behind this procedure is to ensure that you understand what this class is all about and are adequately prepared. You must have lots of initiative and problem-solving ability for this class. We will not judge based on GPA. We understand that the best system builders are not always the best test takers (and vice versa). The only prerequisite is CSE 30, but students to have taken other core courses, especially 140, 141, 120, will have some advantages in terms of developing projects. To apply, submit the following information to both instructors and the TA (emails on main page):
We will respond to your application email with a short confirmation to say we got your application. After Sept 17, the initial submission deadline for the applications, we will start our decision process. If you miss the Sept 17 deadline, we may still consider your application based on availability. In any case, you should probably enroll in other backup classes in case you do not get selected; you can always drop that class if you get into CSE 145. Based on your application, we may invite you to our office hours before the start of the quarter to help in the decision process. We will judge the applications based on how prepared we feel you are to handle these projects. Therefore, those that have experience and previous work in your potential project domain will be ranked higher. You may contact us or the project mentors to get a better idea of what the project entails. Students who have done initial work to find a project (or even better have started working on the project) are more likely to be accepted into the class. We are always happy to talk to you more about the class and its projects. |
