Objectives

Developing non-trivial software systems requires a systematic approach and the use of adequate tools. The goal of this class is to help you understand the critical issues that arise in planning, design, integration, testing, and team coordination in software development. Working on the class project, you will practice techniques and use tools to cope with some of those issues. While giving you an idea of how it is to be part of a team working on large software projects, the class prepares you for the projects of upper-division classes.

Topics

Readings

Readings will be available on-line (linked from the class Web page) or in the cse70 reader (available from AS Soft Reserves). You are expected to do the readings by due date. During lecture I will not necessarily review all the assigned material but rather try to clarify and help understanding the difficult parts. Come to class prepared to discuss the material and ready to ask questions.

Project

You will participate in a team project applying XP practices while developing an application that uses the Internet Relay Chat (IRC) protocol. Your team will meet weekly with the TA to evaluate your progress and plan for the next week. The course project will conclude with a short demo during the last week.

Labs

During lab sections you will be assigned tasks to complete with assistance from the instructor and TA. Accomplishing these tasks will help you learn the tools and will usually contribute directly to your project.

Class web page

On the web page you can find instructor and TAs contact info, the class schedule, assigned readings, announcements, and useful links. The web page will be continually updated. Check often!

Grading

Your course grade will be based on the following: 50% class project, 20% midterm, and 30% final exam. The final will be comprehensive, covering all course material including the reader and other assigned readings, lecture slides, the project, and other material discussed in class and during the lab sections.

Academic integrity

Plagiarism and other forms of cheating will not be tolerated. It is not fair to honest students to take cheating lightly, nor is it fair to the cheater to let him/her go on thinking that is a reasonable alternative in life.
