Description
During this lab you will make a local working
copy of your project and commit some trivial changes.
Then you will repeat the same actions using Eclipse.
These operations will be reflected on your project management
system where you will create a milestone and tickets.
Finally, you will try existing IRC clients and observe differences
with the base code for the project.
Task 0
-
Talk with your teammates and agree on a time to meet weekly, apart from the
meeting with the customer.
-
As a team, update your Trac wiki to show the names of the team members, the
time and location of your weekly meetings (one with the customer, one without).
-
In Trac(cse70.ucsd.edu/svn/yourteam), go to your team's Roadmap and rename the first milestone Lab 1.
Split your team into 3 working groups for this lab only. Each will complete the
following tasks that requires modifying the project code as described.
-
Go to New Ticket and create 3 new tickets. Associate each with the Lab 1
milestone and put an appropriate username in the Assign to field. Here are
the tasks:
-
Short summary: Change IRC Client name. Full description: Change the name of
the client, which is displayed in the window title.
-
Short summary: Change default nickname. Full description: Change the nickname
that is used by default when the client connects to a server at startup.
-
Short summary: Change default username. Full description: Change the username
that is used by default when the client connects to a server at startup.
Task 1
-
Log in to a lab machine running GNU/Linux. If you need to find your account information,
use the ACS account lookup tool.
-
Run
prep cs70u (by typing it at a shell prompt) to prepare your environment.
-
View
svn's built-in help by running svn help checkout.
-
Check out the project by running
svn co http://cse70.ucsd.edu/svn/yourteam
-
Change your working directory to
yourteam.
-
Run
ant. What happens?
-
Find and modify the file
IRCClient.java by changing the default
username, clientname, and nickname.
-
Check you changes:
-
Commit your changes by running
svn commit and remember to include
detailed comment as described in Project Evaluation.
Task 2
-
Open Eclipse by running
eclipse.
-
Change to the
SVN Repository Exploring perspective (Window-->Open Perspective-->Other...).
-
Add your team's repository (http://cse70.ucsd.edu/svn/yourteamname).
-
Check out the source code and create a Java Project.
-
When asked, select the "Create separate folders for source and class files" option.
-
Find and modify the file
IRCClient.java by changing the default
user, name, and nick.
-
Check you changes (
Team-->Synchronize with Repository).
-
Commit your changes and remember to include
detailed comment as described in Project Evaluation.
-
Close the ticktes.
Task 3
-
Learn about IRC and the project by exploring the CSE 70 project wiki.
See especially the links about IRC like IRChelp.org, which provides some introductory material.
-
Run some IRC clients available in the lab.
You'll learn a lot faster by jumping in, playing around, experimenting, and trying to do things. Have fun!
-
Running an IRC client and the project base code application do the following on both:
-
join a channel,
-
send messages on a channel and to a user, and
-
part from a channel;
what are the differences?
Check List
-
What are and how to create milestones and tickets.
-
What are SVN, Eclipse, and IRC.
-
How to make a local working copy: checkout from a repository, make changes,
check the differences, and commit the updates
(
checkout, status, diff, commit, ...).
-
Basic IRC
(
join, part, send messages, quit, ...).
