Required Readings

Each week an invited speaker will talk about a special topic in high performance
computing. Each week a set of readings and or web sites that are relevant to the
next lecture will be listed. You are expected to read this information before class
and come to class prepared with 2-3 questions about the topic. Your questions
will be used to stimulate discussions after the lecture so think of things you would
like to talk about.

MAR 29 Sid Karin & Reagan Moore
Introduction to High Performance Computing

You will be given information about SDSC / NPACI in class. Please take a look through the SDSC / NPACI web pages.  You also need to read:
Misleading Performance Specifications in the Supercomputer Field
David H. Bailey
RNR Technical Report RNR-92-005
December 1, 1992.

APR 5 Thomas Sterling
Innovative Architectures Towards Ultra-Scale Computing

Please take a look through the HTMT web site (Hybrid Technology Multithreaded Architecture) for a project overview, a list of papers that may be of interest (you aren't required to read them), and links to project leaders' individual pages.  Please also look through
A Design Analysis of a Hybrid Technology Multithreaded Architecture for Petaflops Scale Computation (pdf format).

APR 12 Nick Aneshansley

Please look through the Sun servers web site - especially the links to the Sun high end servers, Enterprise Servers, E-10000, white papers, etc.

APR 19 Don Nott

Please pick up written material from Sid's office to read for monday (there are three packets of information).  You can ask for directions to his office at the front desk in SDSC.

APR 26
Mike Vildibill

Please review this overview of SDSC facilities, and info on NPACI Computational and Archival Resources.

MAY 3 John Palmer

This talk will be about IBM data mining and data manipulation capabilities.  Some good projects to read about in advance are the General Parallel File System (GPFS),
the Quest Data Mining Project, and the DB2 Universal Database.  There are also lots of other interesting projects to look at on the general IBM Almaden Computer Science Research Page.

MAY 10
Mark Seager

We will be discussing the ASCI Blue Pacific Computer.  First, review the chapter from In Search of Clusters given out for Don Nott's talk.  Next read up on recent news about the project, the evolution of ASCI platforms, the ASCI Problem Solving Environment, and some of the initial applications.  There is also lots of other interesting projects to check out at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory page (this is for your interest, not for class).

MAY 17 Reagan Moore

Please review articles on high performance storage systems and the following presentation on large scale data systems.  A discussion of the relevant concepts and problems may be found in Chapter 5 of  The Grid: Blueprint for a New Computing Infrastructure (this reference is for those of you with additional interest in this topic, it is not required).

MAY 24 John Feo

Please review general information about Tera and  read some of the documents in the Tera library.  Please also review 'CRAY T90 vs. Tera MTA: The Old Champ Faces a New Challenger'.
