Graphics For Exploratory Data Analysis

The xvgr-2.09 package has been installed on the CSE Sun-4s in /usr/X11/bin/xvgr. The xvgr docs are in /usr/local/doc/xvgr.

ACE/gr is an X Y plotting tool for workstations or X-terminals using X. xvgr is the XView version of ACE/gr. A few of its features are:

  • Polynomial regression, splines, running averages, DFT/FFT, cross/auto-correlation.

  • Plots up to 10 graphs with 30 data sets per graph.

  • User defined scaling, tick marks, labels, symbols, line styles, colors.

  • Read and write parameters used during a session.

  • Hardcopy support for PostScript and FrameMaker .mif format.

See the May 1992 issue of CSE Uptime for another article on xvgr. The file /usr/local/doc/xvgr/xvgr.ps is the full document that came with the software. It is over 80 pages long, so please use ghostview to preview the document. If you must print it, conserve paper and use the following command to output 2 pages per sheet:

    	% cd /usr/local/doc/xvgr
    	% mpage -2 -PpsX xvgr.ps

For an interactive visual overview of what xvgr does (highly recommended!):

    	% cd /usr/local/doc/xvgr/examples
    	% dotest

As you finish each demo, select Exit from the File pull-down menu to continue to the next demo.
