Research Paper Guidelines
The research paper is due in class March 12 .
A 1-2 page outline is due February 12. Please attend
office hours to discuss your outline with the instructor.
The research paper should be 12-15 pages typewritten. Your goal is to give an
overview of a current research problem and a set of researchers' solution to that problem.
Your paper should include the following components. Remember, your mileage may
vary depending on the subject of the paper.
-
Start with an Introduction.
Describe the problem to be solved. Why is it an important problem?
After you have motivated the problem, you want to very briefly describe
the approach of the researchers that is the focus of your paper.
-
What have other people tried to do to solve the problem? This is related work.
You can find out about related work by following some of the more important bibliographic
references from the papers you are reading.
-
After the introduction and the related work, you want to get to the focus of your paper.
How do your researchers solve the problem? Give a concise and clear technical
summary of their approach. What is their model? What are the good points and
problem areas of their solution?
-
If there are results, you will want to talk about them next. Are there experiments
which support the validity of the approach? Are there proofs? Give a
quantitative analysis of why this is a good approach.
-
At the end of the paper, provide a summary. You will want to redescribe the
problem, the solution approach and verifying experiments. You may also want
to mention open problems or related problems that might be addressed next.
-
Don't forget to include bibliographic references. They should come at the
end of the paper. You will want to refer to them in the text, and list them at the end
of the paper.
