Problem Solving Assignment 6

There is one problem in this PSA.

Note 1: Besides writing the code there is an interview process required for this PSA. Your interview is worth 10% of the PSA grade and is done individually.

Note 2: You will be required to submit your result on the class wiki. This will count for 5% of your PSA grade AND it will be used to enter you in the CSE8A Art Show. There will be a prize for the "best" collage!

This homework requires skills from all Chapters up to Chapter 6.

Collage -- Write a program that uses at least 3 images to create a collage. The three images can each be duplicated in the collage. Every image should appear at least one with a filter on it. You can apply more than one filter to an image if you like. Really, just be creative.

Details

You must put a comment at the top of your code that specifies, for both you and your partner, your: real names, login names, and PIDs, And a two to four sentence description of the program (one description for each program).

Use a multi-line comment (/* */).

Comments are important. Code must be properly commented to receive full credit.

IMPORTANT: Code that does not compile will receive a zero on this assignment. It is your responsibility to ensure it compiles.

Collage

Description: This PSA is a continuation of PSA 5A. For this assignment, you will be making another collage. This time you will use at least 3 different pictures. Each picture will go through (at least) filter (though you can also include unfiltered versions of the picture in your collage too). You have to have at least one new filter from chapter 5, or a unique method that you write that does something more then just change the color of the picture. Some examples of fun filters are found here. Overall, you should have at least 3 different pictures all on one canvas in an interesting way. There should be NO white space on your canvas at all. You can choose to overlap your pictures if needed to remove whitespace.

Methods:

Add at least one new filter method to Picture.java that does not come from the textbook. This can be your "new filter" from PSA5A -- if you think it is cool enough :) But think of the cool things you can do with if statements!
The methods that you use to filter your pictures can either change the calling object or in the case of merge and shrink, can take in a picture and return the modified version.
You should have at least 3 pictures filtered with at least one new filter, either from the above list, or one that you create.
You are free to use more pictures and more filters, just make sure it works and there is no white space anywhere on your photo.

Collage method

This method should take have as many parameters as you have filtered pictures.
This method should return a picture, which is the final collage
The first thing that you should do in this method is create a new picture that will be exactly the right size, after all pictures have been copied onto it, so that there are no white spaces. (HINT: something else that you do is make your canvas a different color, so that just in case your pictures don't fit PERFECTLY, there is still no white space)
You should have as many nested for loops as you have parameteres.
You should refer to your previous PSA and your text (page 143-144) for your loops.
NOTE: Unlike your previous PSA, you should not choose pictures of all the same size and put them side by side. You can choose pictures that will make it easy to put them all on one canvas, but make it interesting. There are ways of writing your for loops to design some pretty interesting and good looking pictures. Some people have written their for loops so that their pictures came out diagonal, upside down, or just in interesting positions around the canvas.
This is your chance to BE CREATIVE. You will not be graded on your creativity, but you should definitely have fun with it, experiment and enjoy this program! Besides, a great looking picture is more likely to be an art show grand prize winner!

Using methods in an application:

Create a file called PSA5A.java
In this file you will choose three pictures. So that your collage comes out right, you can hardcode which pictures and then include them with your submission. If you'd like, you can design your program so that it accepts any picture, but this is not necessary, just something that might be fun to experiment with.
You CAN show the original pictures if you want, but they must also appear with a filter.
You should then create a picture that is only be used to call the collage method. Since we are creating a new picture inside of the method and returning it, and you are passing the pictures you want to put on the final product as parameters, this will be used just to call the method. Purpose of this picture:

Then call each method you created on the pictures.
Then call collage and save the picture (code above for this).

Please see the following image for an example. This is horse.jpg gone through a grayscale, bridge.jpg gone through a negate, those two gone through a blend and barbara.jpg gone through a subtract color then placed in the middle, on top of the blended picture..

How to turnin your homework electronically

When you are ready to turn in your homework, first open a terminal window by right clicking on the empty area of your computer's desktop (have to use lab computers or remotely connect from your home computer using SSH or Putty) and select "Open a New Terminal". Then, run bundlePSA6 from your PSA6/bookClasses directory. 2 files are required to be submitted for PSA6:

Picture.java
PSA6.java

If you don't have one of these files present or have misspelled the name of one of these files, the bundle script will complain! Here you can see how you can run these commands:

Make sure the Turnin is successful, otherwise we won't receive your submission! . If you want to make changes after you've turned in your homework, make the changes and run bundlePSA6 again. The program will warn you that a "previously turned-in file exists" and ask if "you wish to over-write this existing file". Respond in the affirmative by typing y and pressing the Enter key.

Getting your interview done INDIVIDUALLY

10% of your grade on this assignment will come from an interview you will have with one of the tutors during Open Lab Hours. You have 48 weekday hours after the electronic turnin deadline to get your interview done. The deadline for the interview for PSA6 is Thurs Feb 12th (theoretically at midnight, but actually by the end of the last tutor hour scheduled). Remember, the tutors may be busy after 4pm helping CSE8B students

You get an interview by going into B260 during a scheduled tutor hour. Find the tutor, ask them if you can interview for the 8A PSA. If they have others who are waiting for interviews, your name will go on the end of the list of people waiting. Interviews take about 5 minutes each. It is your responsibility to go in early enough that you can get your interview completed. If everyone waits until the last hour on Thurs, this will not work.

For the interview you will need to have a copy of your team's assignment in your account. If you are using your partner's account to submit the files, make sure you email them to yourself and save them under your account so that you have them available for the interview. The tutor will ask you to log in, change to the directory where your work is and then to follow their directions. They will ask you to run your program to show that it works, open files in Dr. Java (or your favorite editor), and ask you questions about HOW your code works. Additionally, they may question you as to how you would (theoretically) make small changes to the program to have it do something slightly different. You will not actually be required to change your code.

Learning to be able to explain your problem solving process and discuss code with another human being is a very important professional skill. We hope that this process will help you develop this skill.
