This course consists of a set of lectures, most of which are from inside our
department. Some of the lectures, however, will be special outside
speakers who will be here as part of the Distinguished lecture series.
In this course, you will be required to
write a review for each talk. This course is pass/fail. You will be
graded on the quality of your reviews. Reviews:
should be at most 100 words. If it's longer
than 100 words, I won't read past the 100th word. It is important for
you to learn how to present your ideas in crisp, concise sentences.
should be in bullet form, with exactly three bullets:
the first bullet should summarize the talk in one sentence
the second bullet should identify the coolest/neatest aspect of
this talk (ie: what did you like the most in the talk?)
the third bullet should identify a new idea for future
research related to the ideas presented in the talk. By new, I mean
that the idea was not mentioned during the talk. This is very
important, because it will train you in thinking about research and
research ideas.
