Data, Information, and Knowledge Management Systems

Distributed data collections, digital libraries, data grids, and persistent archives all require the ability to manage data, information, and knowledge. The talk will cover the basic levels of abstraction that are needed to describe digital entities and their associated storage systems, and present the current state of the art for implementing data grids and persistent archives. Examples of the technology will be presented, including the National Virtual Observatory, the NLM Visible Embryo project, the NSF Grid Physics Network, the DOE Particle Physics Data Grid, the National SMET Education Digital Library, and the National Archives and Records Administration persistent archive.
