CSE 190 Project

Your CSE 190 project will have you create a database backed web site with a sophisticated presentation and logic. You will be working on one of the four projects below, depending on the first letter of your last name:

  1. A-I: Address book lookup: Given a person's last name, show their first name, last name, phone number, and the name of their department.
  2. J-M: Travel times available: Given a date, show the list of available flights and their prices.
  3. N-R: Book lover match site: Given an author's last name, show the list of registered users who list that name as a favorite author.
  4. S-Z: Stock quotes: Given a stock quote symbol, show the current price and trading volume.

Turning in your project

Implementation

You may use any set of technologies to build your project. You will submit the URL for grading or any source required. If you plan on using an atypical implementation language (e.g. Lisp), please send email ahead of time.

Assistance

You may contact either of the two TAs for the course for help on implementing the project:

Examples

JSP example

We have set up a shared JSP environment that may be used by all students. Rather than you setting up your own servers, the server is already set up with working code.

How to set up the sample:

% prep cs190m
% cp ../public/jsp_sample.tar .
% tar xvf jsp_sample.tar
% ./fixnames

Your application will look similar to this sample student project. You will make changes under ~/tomcat/webapps/cs190/jsp/cs190 and ~/tomcat/webapps/cs190/WEB-INF/classes

PHP example

We have set up a shared PHP environment that may be used by all students. Rather than setting up your own instances of Apache with PHP and mysql, the server has been set up with working code.

How to set up the sample:

% prep cs190m
% cp ../public/php_sample.tar .
% tar xvf php_sample.tar

Your application will look similar to this sample student project. You will make changes under the ~/php directory.

Connectivity

Note from ACS on connecting to ieng9 (6 March):
We had a system problem last night and nobody
could login to ieng9, it's fixed now.

Regarding the database, you have two options:

You may explore the database structure with the mysql client:

% mysql --host=kaivalya --user=cse190 -p project
Password: cse190

mysql> show tables;
mysql> desc users;
mysql> select * from users;

All students have access to a Unix account for this course. You use your OCE account for access. [To gain access, use the prep command: "prep cs190m"].

If you did not have an existing account, your name should be on the following list. Your user id is on the left:

cs190maa Aakarsh K Ahuja
cs190mab Dylan F Doxey
cs190mac Clifford R Fong
cs190mad Eric L Go
cs190mae Brian D Hickson
cs190maf Alan P Ho
cs190mag Tai R Hsiao
cs190mah Young K Lee
cs190mai David V Leung
cs190maj Ryan C Michel
cs190mak Adrian J Phruksukarn
cs190mal Richa Sharma
cs190mam Michael A Shinn
cs190man Trevor V Tan
cs190mao Grace Y Tu
cs190map Reshmi J Vadakel
cs190maq Karen Yang
cs190mar Harvey H Young

Your initial password is your UCSD student ID code (NOT your SSN), which begins with a letter. When used as an initial computer account password, be sure to:

  1. use a lower-case 'a' as the first character
  2. type the remaining 8 numerals without spaces or hyphens

Change your initial password after you login. Type "help password" for instructions.

You may access your account from the following labs:

To enter the EBU* labs, you will need an access code. You may email myself or the TAs for the access code.

Your server is ieng9, accessible from various ACS labs on campus.

If desired, you may view details on the tables.

Grading Checklist
