April 26th:  Hardware systems used to assemble petabyte disk systems
                    Mike Vildibill

I plan to break the class into three sections:

  - Facilities.  Overview and tour.
  - I/O.  Overview of dataflow within and through SDSC.
  - Computation.  Overview of computational systems at SDSC.
I expect not only to provide an overview to these systems but will also discuss why
given systems and configurations were decided upon.  I will be assisted by SDSC's
Dan Drobnis (Manager Facilities Engineering) and Dr. Phil Andrews (Manager,
Advanced Systems).

May 17th:  Information Based Computing
                  Reagan W. Moore

The focus of the lecture will be high-performance data management systems.
We will characterize the amount of data that Teraflops systems must handle,
describe current technology for supporting petabyte (10^15 bytes)
archives, and describe the types of new technology that will support
exabyte (10^18 bytes) archives in the future.  When massive data
collections are created, new software management systems are needed to
control the collections and support information discovery and data
retrieval.  Projects currently underway at SDSC to provide data management
will be described, including the Storage Resource Broker (SRB) and
Meta-data Catalog (MCAT), which are being used to implement digital
libraries.
