Prerequisite

Students must have taken CSE132A or an equivalent one. CSE132A material will be quickly reviewed (see below).

Textbook and Syllabus

The course textbook is "A First Course in Database Systems" by Ullman and Widom. We will cover the following material in the order shown below. Items in Italics will be quickly reviewed. The students must have already covered them in CSE132A or an equivalent course.

Note that the textbook of CSE132A, "Database System Concepts" by Korth and Silberschatz, does not cover the material of chapters 6, 7, and 8 at the level required for this course. (The same applies to parts of 2.) Though some books will be put on reserve it is strongly recommended that you obtain the textbook.

Grading

The class will involve a "large" multi-step project in designing, querying, and updating a database. The project will be built on IBM's DB2. It will constitute 60% of the grade. You are allowed to work in teams of two. A first cut of the project appears here.

The other 40% of the grade will be based on the final exam. Note that the final will emphasize material that has not been sufficiently exercised by the project.
