Guest lecture by Cory Myers, Freedom of the Press Foundation
SecureDrop is a whistleblowing system for secure communication between journalists and sources. It was originally designed in 2013, the summer of the Snowden revelations, by two programmers and activists with classic cypherpunk bona fides, Aaron Swartz and Kevin Poulsen.
Redesigning SecureDrop with current cryptography and technologies---and for current threats---is giving us the opportunity to aim for greater security for both journalists and sources, in a wider variety of environments. It's also requiring different kinds of research, collaboration, and engineering than the project has traditionally employed---or are available to many projects of our size and scope.
We'll discuss the history and evolution of SecureDrop, the problems we're working on now, and some lessons we're learning along the way.
