Welcome to ECE109, Spring 2022
This course is an introduction to probability for engineers. You will have the opportunity to learn basic concepts that used extensively in such areas as machine learning and data science, robotics and control, communication systems, and signal processing. In fact, probability plays a crucial role in many disciplines beyond engineering --- computational genomics, quantum mechanics, and stock market analysis, to name a few.During this course, you will get acquainted with essential ingredients of every engineer's toolkit: conditional probability and independence, random variables, probability density functions, mean, variance, and covariance, normal distribution, law of large numbers, and much more. You will learn to ask not "Is it so?" but rather "What is the probability that it is so?" You will also learn how to answer such questions.
You will need to install and familiarize yourself with Zoom, which is the video conferencing software recommended by UC San Diego. All lectures, discussions, and office hours will be offered via Zoom conferencing. Students are not required to have webcams (except, possibly, for exams), but microphones are highly encouraged. All Zoom meetings can be joined via a smartphone as well.
Good luck in ECE109!

Important Notice: This is a rigorous course that makes extensive use of discrete mathematics and calculus. If you are serious about doing well in this class, you are strongly encouraged to make sure that you are at ease with these math topics, as they will be used throughout the course.
