Discussion 1
background into digital logic design, class, etc

reward for answering stuff in class!

what is a computer? have you ever had to fix a computer before for a friend? they think it's a magic box.

main point of cs: abstraction

start with cmos, physics/ee level and how it can form the 3 elementary gates (not, add, or)

these are 1-bit gates. explain how they can form multi-bit gates

from these 3, we can start making more interesting modules, like adders, etc
derive an adder from those gates, and then move up to multibit adders

describe where cmos/digital logic fall on the abstraction "tree"

cse 140: theory behind digital logic design, minimizing logic, why thats importnat

cse 140l: lab class, implement actual digital logic circuits, get a better feel for whats going on

motivation behind this class, maybe my experience as an embedded systems eng

goal for this class: not to learn details, but to get a very good sense and understanding of digital logic, etc
won't go too deep into any one area, etc. more interested about people learning digital logic and
understanding the role it plays than in memorizing details or low level things like substrates and specific circuits

website will have links tho to more advanced topics

explain FPGA, quartus software, EDA, asic vs fpga, industry stuff like xilinx vs altera

explain how all digital ICs are basically made from digital logic gates (like chips in your cell phone)

explain process of how programming FPGA, inputs/outputs, how it maps to the actual switches and LEDs on the board

Discussion 2

Announcements - lab 1 is assigned, lab hours, etc.

Went over making a half adder on the FPGA board and using Quartus II. Basically
tutorial stuff. Covered binary display on the digits.

Also showed the 4-bit adder, schematic of it, and how it looks like.

Covered modules in Quartus.

Covered functional simulations in Quartus.
