CSE 140L Hardware Lab Two

Objective

In this lab, you will build 8-bit ripple adder/subtractor, 8-bit carry-lookahead adder, and 8-bit carry-select adder.

Part 1. 8-bit Adder/Subtractor with Overflow

Build a 8-bit Ripple Adder/Subtractor with Overflow Indicator. For negative numbers, use 2's compliment representation.

Build and simulate the circuit using ModelSim (show at least 8 different simulation cases).

Part 2. 8-bit Carry Lookahead Adder

Build a 8-bit carry lookahead adder. Carry lookahead adder is an improvement over the ripple adder. Its purpose is to improve the speed of the adder by shortening the critical path. Build an 8-bit adder with 2 4-bit lookahead adders.

Build and simulate the circuit using ModelSim (show at least 8 different simulation cases).

Part 3. 8-bit Carry Select Adder

Build an 8-bit carry select adder. Carry select adder is another way to improve the adder circuit by duplicating the amount of hardware. Build an 8-bit select adder by adding one more 4-bit carry lookahead adder in part 2.

Build and simulate the circuit using ModelSim (show at least 8 different simulation cases).
