Introduction to State Machine Ciruits Design

Due date: Dec 9, 1999

Objectives

We will learn how to design and build simple state machine circuits.

Part 1. Asynchronous Counter

Design a counter with the following sequence: 0-2-4-6-1-3-5-7 and the sequence will repeat.
i. Design this counter (including state digram, state table, and K-maps, etc)
ii. Build and simulate the circuit using xilinx.
iii. Demonstrate your circuit to the TA: ______________________

Part 2. Asynchronous Counter

Design a counter with the following sequence: 0-1-2-3-4-5-6-7 and the sequence will repeat.
i. Design this counter (including state digram, state table, and K-maps, etc)
ii. Build and simulate the circuit using xilinx.

Part 3. Garage Door Controller

A garage door with the following characteristics:
i. Design this controller (Include a state digram and briefly describe the state diagram. Also include the state table, and K-maps, algebraic equation, and final answer).
ii. Build the circuit and simulate is using xilinx

Part 4. Freeway Traffic Control

Around 4pm in the afternoon when much of the traffic starts to enter the freeway, a set of GREEN/RED signal are used to prevent highway jams. Here is the requirement definition:
i. Design this controller (Include a state digram and briefly describe the state diagram and how it satisfies the requirement definition. Also include the state table, and K-maps, algebraic equation, and final answer).
ii. Build the circuit and simulate is using xilinx
iii. Show the TA that your circuit works_________________________________
iv. What happens when your car breaks down on the carpool lane at the signal and it's your turn to go on GREEN light?

Part 5. Freeway Traffic Control 2

Similiar to Part 3, now we add an additional single-lane (makes 3 lanes total) with the additional requirement definition:
i. Design the state diagram for this and briefly explain the diagram.
