CSE 140L Hardware Lab Three

Registers and Counters

Due date: Nov. 18, 1999

Objective

In this lab, we will learn how to build different types off Registers and different 2 types of Counters.

Part 1. 16-bit Register

Build a 16-bit register.
i. Design the 16-bit Register using D flip-flop and briefly describe what a 16-bit register does and how it works.
ii. Build and simulate the circuit using xilinx.
iii. Demonstrate your circuit to the TA: ______________________

Part 2. Shift Register

Build a 8-bit Shift register.
i. Design the Shift Register using D flip-flop and briefly describe what a 8-bit shift register does and how it works.
ii. Build and simulate the circuit using xilinx.
iii. Demonstrate your circuit to the TA: ______________________

Part 3. Ripple Counter

Build a 4 bit ripple counter that will count from 0000 to 1111 and starts the sequence again.
i. Design the Ripple Counter using J/K flip-flop. Briefly describe your design using a timing diagram. With the same design, you can't simply replace the J/K flip-flop and put a D flip-flop to obtain the same result. Why not? What additional logic do you need to add around the D-FF so it will work as a counter?
ii. Build and simulate the J/K flip-flop ripple counter circuit using xilinx.
iii. With the same design, you can't simply replace the J/K flip-flop and put a D flip-flop to obtain the same result. Why not? What additional logic do you need to add around the D-FF so it will work as a counter?

Part 4. Synchronous Counter

Build a 4 bit synchronous counter that will count from 0000 to 1111 and starts the sequence again.
i. Design the Synchronous Counter using J/K flip-flop. Briefly describe your design. What is the advantage and disadvantage using synchronous counter as compare to ripple counter.
ii. Build and simulate the circuit using xilinx.
