Assignment 5, cse 9A Fall, 96 DO NOT TURN THIS IN WITH THE turnin PROGRAM BEFORE 8 AM Sunday, November 10. If you finish before then, just wait a while before turning it in. Also, check for changes before turning it in. Deadlines: For turnin program: midnight at end of day on Friday Nov 15 with the usual penalty: midnight at end of day on Saturday Nov 16 For interviews: End of day Tuesday Nov 19 Do not wait till the last minute. There will not be a postponement of these deadlines. Write a program that will compute the average word length (average number of characters per word) for a file containing some text. A word is defined as any string of symbols that is preceeded and followed by any of the following (and that does not contain any of the following) a white space character a period a comma a question mark or an exclamation mark. Your program should get the file name from the user. Use functions. Sample compiled object code is in the file hw05.o Be sure you notice what the object code does when it is given the name of a file that does not exist. Hints: Getting a resonable definition of functions for subtasks can be tricky. If you cannot do it with functions, you can do it without functions but will lose some points. Check for eof often in your program; an eof at any point normally requires a graceful end of the program. This one can be tricky to debug: Check for off by one errors. Be sure you do not count one too many or one too few words. Similarly for numbers of characters. It may help to work on it, then leave it and let it get "cold", and then return to it.
