Fall 2021
CSE 30 Sections A & B

Hi, I'm Keith Muller and like the rest of the campus, I’m glad to be able to return to teaching CSE classes at UCSD in person again. I am looking forward towards a more normal educational environment where we can all learn together, make new friends, see old friends (maybe for the first time in person), and have fun doing so. I am optimistic that we can get through the quarter together and avoid having to go back to remote classes and zoom lectures.

This fall 2021 quarter I am teaching two of the three sections of CSE 30, sections A and B. Together with Prof Chin, the three sections of CSE 30 are working together as one to provide a better learning experience for the students. All three CSE30 sections have the same syllabus, take the same exams and work on the same assignments. Supports sites such as edstem and canvas are common for all CSE30 sections. CSE30 TA's and tutors will cover students enrolled in all of the sections. Students have the option of attending any (or all) of the three discussion sessions run by the TA’s. Each section will have its own in person synchronous lecture each week. The lectures for my sections (A & B) are podcast and recorded for offline viewing as well (see podcast.ucsd.edu). Section A & B lectures are the same and you can attend either one as your time and room capacity allows. Students enrolled in Prof Chin’s section C are welcome to attend all of my lectures as well. My lectures will be different from those in Prof Chin’s section C in terms of the materials used and the style of lecture. Prof Chin and I are working together to make sure we cover the same topics by the end of each week. Students enrolled in section A & B have the option of also attending section C lectures if they want to see the same material presented in a different way.

The class syllabus on the CSE 30 Canvas site is your primary guide to the class. Put reminders for test dates and assignment due dates into your smartphone and schedule plenty of time to work on the programming assignments and study for tests. Plan to connect to both the class Canvas site and to edstem at least daily to check for any new notices from myself, Prof Chin, or the TAs. Be proactive, attend lecture, download and study the lecture slides, go to the discussion sessions, see the tutors, and make use of my Zoom office hours (open to all CSE30 students). Additional office hours with me, including in person are available by email appointment. You can also send questions in Canvas or via email if that is what you prefer.
