CSE 260 Grading and Course Policies

Fall 2008

Scott B. Baden

Lecture

Plan on attending lecture regularly and completing the assigned readings prior to the start of class. Lecture complements the text and may cover different material, or offer a different perspective. Lecture slides will be provided after class, so be prepared to take notes.

Grading

Grading will be based on assignments, class participation, and a term research project.

Homework assignments (45%)
There will be 5 homework assignments, and most will be programming labs. Programming labs may be carried out by teams of two, but others must be done individually. While I encourage you to discuss the assignments with your classmates, you must work on individual assignments independently. (Similar rules apply labs done by a team). If you aren't sure about this, see me.

Project (45%)
The class project will account for the largest share of your grade. I will consider individual projects, but I’m expecting that most of you will want to work in a team of two. To learn more about the projects, consult this URL, where a (growing) list of projects is posted:
http://www.cse.ucsd.edu/classes/fa08/cse260/Projects

If you have an idea for a research project, let me know. Projects range from parallelizing an application, enhancing some aspect of performance in an existing application, and may be peformed on a Cluster, the Cell Broadband engine, or a GPGUP.

Class Participation (10%)
Be prepared to discuss the readings during lecture, and contribute to the class discussions.

Academic Integrity

I expect you to do your own work. Though I don't expect there to be a problem in a graduate course, academic integrity which will be strictly enforced. Anyone found plagiarizing another's work, or making their own work available to others, will receive a 0 on the assignment or test and face other possible consequences.   You are assumed to be familiar with the Academic Honestly Policies for this course, as described in the following document: http://www.cse.ucsd.edu/~baden/Integrity.html. If you aren't sure about this policy be sure and see me.

Lateness and Grading appeals

I'll consider any reasonable request for a delayed turnin, but all other assignments must be turned in on time. I'll accept regrade requests for one week after the assignment or exam has been returned to the class. After that, the grading decision is final.
