CSE 160 Grading and Course Policies
FALL 2006

Lecture

It's important that you attend lecture regularly and that you complete the assigned readings prior to the start of class. This makes for a lively classroom! Lecture complements the text and may cover different material, or present the readings from a different perspective. Lecture slides will be provided after class, so please come prepared to take notes.

Grading

Your grade will be based on five assignments (50%), quizzes (15%) the midterm and final exams (35%). The quizzes will be given in section.

Homework assignments (50%)
There will be 5 homework assignments, which will vary in form: problem sets, programming and experimentation. We encourage you to discuss the assignments with your classmates, but be sure to to work independently. If you aren't sure about this, see Professor Baden. Here are some notes on technical writing.

Quizzes (15%)
There will be three quizzes spaced evenly throughout the quarter. Quizzes will be given in section

Midterm (15%)
The midterm exam will be given approximately midway through the course. You will be responsible for all assigned readings, discussions in class, as well as the homeworks.

Final exam (20%)
The final exam will be comprehensive, and cover all course material.

Integrity of Scholarship

Plagiarism and other forms of cheating will not be tolerated. Do meet with us to enrich your experience in the course. Do not submit work or ideas as your own, if it can be attributed to others. Incidents of cheating will be enforced according to the UCSD Policy on Integrity of Scholarship as described in the UCSD General Catalog and in the UCSD Academic Senate's Bylaws and Regulations. Possible penalties include expulsion from the University and receiving an 'F' grade for the course.

In taking this course, you implicitly agree to abide by the Academic Integrity of Scholarship policies of the course, which are further described in the following document:
                            http://www.cse.ucsd.edu/~baden/Integrity.html

Be sure to familiarize yourself with the document. If you have any questions, see Professor Baden.

Lateness and Grading appeals

Plan your work schedule around any planned absences from school and inevitable machine downtime. Late assignments will be accepted for up two (2) days after the deadline, subject to a 10% penalty for each day the assignment is late. This policy will not be waived except in cases of emergency or hardship. In such cases contact us as soon as you can. If you are planning to be away from school, be sure and contact us in advance to avoid penalty.

Re-grade requests will be accepted for one week only, starting from the day the assignment or exam is returned. After that, the grade is unchangeable. Re-grades should be requested only if there is clearly a mistake in grading, such as tallying your score or a missing score. Note that the whole assignment or exam will be re-graded; this could result in a lower score than before. Tampering with a graded assignment paper is considered a breach of Academic Integrity. The procedure for midterm re-grade requests is somewhat different: you must submit your re-grade request during class or office hours. No exam will be accepted for re-grading once it has been removed from the place it was returned.
