Title: Lattices and Cryptography

Abstract:

In this talk I will give a brief introduction to the areas of cryptography and point lattices. Cryptography's main goal is to make computer systems secure against malicious attacks. Since no system can be proved secure in an absolute sense, modern cryptography attempts to build systems that are as hard to break as solving some mathematical problem which is believed to be extremely hard. Most hard problems used to build cryptographic functions come from number theory. (The typical problem being integer factorization.) The study of lattices is a different area of mathematics that also offers many hard computational problems, potentially useful for their cryptographic applications. This presentation won't be neither a general introduction to cryptography, nor to the mathematics of lattices. Rather, it will give a brief introduction to both areas focusing on how lattice problems can be used to solve certain problems in cryptography.

No prior knowledge about cryptography or point lattices is assumed.
