CSE 20 Discrete Mathematics

Grading Policy

There will be two midterms and eight quizzes (quizzes given Wednesdays, 2:30 - 3:20 pm, CENTR 212 (Section A) and CSB 002 (Section B), except for the first and the last Wednesday of the quarter).

The midterms will be given Tuesday, May 5 and Thursday, May 28 (in class). The material to be covered on these midterms will be announced in class.

The final exam is scheduled for (check as we get close for room changes, but now scheduled in the regular class) 11:30-2:30 pm Thursday, June 11.

No makeup quizzes will be given, but everyone is allowed to throw out their lowest quiz score.  Two letter grades will be assigned in the course G1 and G2. G1 is based on the quizzes (with lowest thrown out) and midterms together. G2 is based on the final exam alone.  Your course grade will be MAX(G1, G2). Thus, if you are happy with G1, you won't have to take the final exam.  If you want to skip all quizzes and midterms and just take the final exam, your grade will be G2.

All quizzes and exams will be open book, BUT NO OTHER MATERIAL.  You can, of course, make notes in your book but no sheets of paper, etc., will be allowed in the exam.  Calculators may be brought to exams and quizzes.

Quiz questions will be mostly based on preassigned set of homework problems. We may add occasionally some interesting and inspiring problem that you have not seen before, but mostly, they will resemble your homework. We are doing it this way in order to motivate you to do your homework regularly. HOMEWORK IS OPTIONAL. You may choose to have some of your homework problems graded, in which case you should turn in your homework set to the grader representative who will be always present at the time when you take your quizzes. Homework (and homework solutions a week later) will be posted on the web.
