Music

Besides my academic work, I am also an active classical flutist. I studied with Liisa Grigorov in Ithaca, NY, and previously with Lucinda Ladd and Claudia Bissette in South Kingstown, RI. I'm always looking for opportunities to perform in the San Francisco Bay Area.

I am currently a member of the College of San Mateo Symphonic Band under the direction of Mike Galisatus.

From 2008-2012, I was a member of two large ensembles: the UCSD Wind Ensemble under the direction of Robert Zelickman, and the Coastal Communities Concert Band under the direction of Robert Fleming, based in Encinitas, CA. With the CCCBand, I have performed in Phoenix and Las Vegas as well as the San Diego region. I also performed with various chamber groups at UCSD, coached by János Négyesy. I performed the Flute Quartet in D Major (Op. 20, No. 2) by J. C. Bach with János Négyesy, Päivikki Nykter, and Cecilia Kim:

As a soloist, I performed two recitals at Cornell University: on May 14, 2006 (with Graeme Bailey, piano), and April 20, 2008 (with Linda Boianova, piano, and William Cowdery, harpsichord). I performed works by J.S. Bach, Ernst Bloch, Henri Dutilleux, Charles Griffes, Paul Hindemith, Karel Husa, Sigfrid Karg-Elert, Carl Nielsen, and Darius Milhaud. During my four years at Cornell, I was a member of the Cornell University Wind Ensemble (CUWE), under the direction of Cynthia Johnston Turner. In January 2006 and 2008, I traveled with CUWE to Costa Rica, where we donated hundreds of musical instruments to music schools in Matapalo, San Isidro, and Poas. We also performed in Santa Cruz, Tres Rios, San Jose, and Escazu in venues ranging from community parks to the Eugene O'Neill Theatre at the North American Cultural Center. With CUWE, I also performed in more "exotic" locations such as Toronto, Rochester, NY, and Hamilton, Ontario.

At Cornell, I was also a member of the Cornell Symphony Orchestra (CSO), under the direction of Chris Younghoon Kim. Besides regular concerts in Ithaca, we performed in Berlin, Germany in January 2007.

Finally at Cornell, I also made appearances with the Cornell Chamber Orchestra, Festival Chamber Orchestra, and CU Jazz Ensembles. My involvement with the Cornell Music Department led me to receive the Ellen Gussman Adelson Prize in May 2008.

In a past life (2003-2004), I was a member of eSKape, my high school's jazz choir. Under the direction of Dianne Rebelo, we took first place at the Berklee Jazz Festival in 2004. I was also a member of numerous concert bands and orchestras around southern New England.

Composition

In 2002, I composed an Overture for concert band. It was premiered by the UCSD Wind Ensemble on March 15, 2012 and later performed by the Coastal Communities Concert Band on May 20, 2012.
