Introduction

P. Venkat Rangan founded and directs the Multimedia Laboratory at the University of California, San Diego, where he serves as a Professor of Computer Science and Engineering. The UCSD Multimedia Laboratory is internationally recognized to be a pioneer of research in Multimedia Systems and Internet E Commerce. Venkat has also been the founder and founding President/CEO/Chairman of the Board of Yodlee, Inc., now an multinational leader in online aggregation services.

Venkat's research spans the areas of:

    High Bandwidth Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs, WiFi)
    Active Gateways for Home Wireless Networks
    Plug and Play Multimedia Devices for Wireless
    Location Detection in Mobile Networks
    Digital Video and Audio on the Internet: Video Distribution and Delivery; Media Synchronization; E Commerce on the Internet: Aggregation, Personal Transaction Agents
    Technology Entrepreneurship

 

Biographical Information

Venkat's research results have been reported in about 100 publications in leading conferences and journals and 30 patents (including the very first ones in video on demand, video caching servers, and e-commerce aggregation for the Internet). The multimedia lab has also been a leader in experimental implementations and seeding of entrepreneural companies in digital video on-demand servers, tele-conferencing systems, Internet and Web-based automatic information and account aggregation systems. Venkat's research has been supported by the NSF, a consortium of industrial sponsors, and California's Micro program.

In addition to serving on numerous program committees and editorial boards, Venkat has founded several "firsts":

    Program Chairman of ACM Multimedia '93: First International Conference on Multimedia, and also
    Editor-in-Chief of the ACM/Springer-Verlag journal: Multimedia Systems.

Venkat has also served as a member of multimedia expert panel of the US National Academy of Sciences/ROC Scientific Committee, a visiting scientist at Xerox Parc, Multimedia Technology Advisor to the Electronics Secretary of the Government of India; and Program Chairman, 1997 Indo-US Bilateral Conference on Multimedia.

Venkat's graduate students have been awarded faculty (e.g., Harrick Vin, U.T. Austin) and industry positions. He has designed and taught highly successful multimedia courses.
