Issues concerning Undergraduate Labs in EBU3b
Lab Configuration
- Should most labs be open areas configured to comfortably fit as many
compute stations as possible vs. a classroom configuration?
- ergonomic issues -- Cal OSHA approved?
- nice, comfortable chairs (will they walk away?)
- pleasant environment with outside light, decorated walls, ...
- uAPE lab in AP&M B402 is an example of an unpleasant environment
- plenty of whiteboards
- printers
- wireless connectivity (along with entire building)
- wiring closet in each lab
- open table area for students bringing in their own portable computing and
impromptu TA/Tutor help area where they may need to spread materials out
- ability to display from a designated station to a screen (occasional -
not configured as a classroom)
- flexibility -- able to configure the labs in different ways
- lockers for TAs/Tutors to store their belongings while on duty in lab
- lockers for storing lab materials -- hardward labs
- how much shelving/cabinet space needed?
- open access vs. assigned to courses
- open most hours and combo/card lock access after hours
- telephone
Discussion Session Room(s)
- at least one room used for scheduling formal discussion sections
- about 50 seats
- an instructors desk with workstations and high-quality projection system
- when screen is down it does not cover the majority of the available
whiteboard space
- plenty of whiteboards
- no student computers
- wireless and wired connectivity
- desks/tables with comfortable chairs
Testing areas within some labs?
- should some intro labs have a testing area configured (ala old EECS
61/63 and CSE 62ab)?
- flexible design with non-permanent walls
- faculty committment to design such courses and testing SW
Teaching Assistant Offices
- each to accommodate 15 to 20 people
- close to Undergraduate Labs
- network connectivity
- each TA assigned a desk in one of these rooms?
- compute station on each desk
- telephone?
Undergraduate Lounge
- a place for student groups to hold meetings
- a place for student groups to store materials, receive mail (assigned
desks for official student groups?) ACM, IEEE, WIC, ...
- Undergraduate library / SW distribution / Electronic library
- close to Undergraduate Labs
- a place for students to just hang out taking a break from the lab?
- telephone?
- should SOE really be providing this kind of space for official student
organizations?
