Note:This homework will not be handed in, and you will not receive a grade on it. However, you are required to do the homework (solving the problems, and writing down the solution) in order to prepare for the second quiz on Feb 14th. Reading the problems and mentally solving them is not enough: writing the solutions is an important part of the homework, as the grades you will receive on the quizzes and final exam will be based both on the correctess of your solution and clarity of presentation. It is important that you solve the problems before checking the solutions. You should check the solutions only after you are reasonable confident that you solved the problem correctly. If you are not quite sure if your solutions are correct, you should go back to the theory and study from the book. Trying to learn how to solve the problems "by examples" does not work.
The following excercises and problems correspond to the part of the program covered in the second quiz (Chapter 2 from the textbook). You should start working on the homework, problem by problem, as soon as we cover the relevant sections from the textbook.
All the following exercises and problems are from the textbook. (Numbers refer to the first edition to the book. The numbers for the second edition, if different, are given in parenthesis.)
Solutions are available from Winter 2003 web page.
Beside these problems you are encouraged to solve more problems in preparation to the quiz. You should be able to solve all of the exercises, and most of the problems at the end of Chapter 2. We will not provide written solutions for all those problems, but if you have any question about them, you can always come show us your solution during office hours.
