24 jun 2005 In the latest (US-centric) world figures from HRO Today, the
HRO market has been through some dramatic changes in the the past 12
months.
I look forward to the time - probably in the next 18 months, when we see
the same thing happening to HR and finance departments. This smacks of
arrogance or stupidity - I'm not sure which yet but be assured, I will
find out.
All the incumbents got bigger, mostly by acquisition.
This insight comes from a New York Times article by Eduardo Porter.
4 jun 2005 It was not in the French or the Netherlanders' long-term
national interest to say "non" or "nee" but the people have spoken. This
opinion piece is not actually negative about offshoring, nor Indian
companies in general. Until suppliers realise that outsourcing may not
be the first and only solution to a client company's back-office
problems, mistakes will continue to be made. It's not the outsourcing of
a call centre to India, that's the next step in drive to productivity.
The arrest last week of a man in western India in an alleged offshoring
fraud case went unreported.
In the survey of 50,000 IT workers, pay for 89 non-certified and 87
certified technical skills grew 3. This research, although confined to
technology, proves it.
So now you know all I know. This, from an unnamed source and respected
commentator on the market. Frauenheim believes that it is driven by a
desire to offshore internally. It is worth reading in full. What were
the advisors doing?
British firms have invested millions in Indian call centres, which
provide good service at a low cost. Investment in the right people and a
realisation that BPO requires waiting for profits for two, possibly
three years, does not compute.
To my knowledge, there are currently only two such groups operating in
this way in Europe, one is a not-for-profit networking organisation, the
other is in effective start-up phase.
1 million service jobs in low-wage countries, up from about 1. But our
man was told he could also buy passport details, medical records and
mobile phone numbers. This makes them attractive in their own right to
approaches to merge or for outright acquisition.
I predicted this would happen over three years ago. It is not that the
business has too many staff, although that may well be the case.
Crooked computer experts at Indian call centres have created a lucrative
market in sensitive information.
Yet after surveying dozens of companies in eight sectors, from
pharmaceutical companies to insurers, it concluded that only a small
fraction of these jobs would actually be sent away.
This was despite the high-profile reporting on the case in April when 16
others were arrested.
6 jun 2005 It's nice to have been picked up after my comments yesterday.
1 million service jobs in low-wage countries, up from about 1. I
predicted this would happen over three years ago.
Given the rate of change required in order to hit the Gershon targets,
I'm sure that Chris will be on 100 hour weeks for the next couple of
years.
What havoc could a terrorist group cause with information like that at
their fingertips?
When the Murdoch-owned newspaper comments in its editorial, politicians
and business leaders have to take note. Siemens yet again demonstrates
its inability to run a successful outsourcing business.
This report has identified that the UK government could save over
GBP20bn each year through greater efficiency through changes such as the
implementation of shared services.
3 jun 2005 Ben Verwaayen the redoubtable CEO of BT certainly has his
finger on the pulse.

Hi Gary,

I have revised the paper. The new data is in general consistent with the old
data. Some effects get stronger and some get weaker (I think it's normal).
The only thing that is different now is that in x-direction the fixation
effect did not reach significance (that is, the scan path was from left to
right; it was significant in the old data). But it is significant without
averaging by subject (in a separate analysis). So I rephrase the results
accordingly and put a footnote on it. I think it's actually a good
opportunity for us to verify whether the effects we obtained were reliable.
:)

Another thing is about whether eye fixations are more divergent in location
at test than during the study phase. To show this effect we need to get the
fixation x phase interaction significant. Neither the old nor the new data
reached significance. Although, if we analyze training and testing data
separately, the fixation effect is significant during training but not at
test. It is tempting to say it's more divergent during training than test
(since we seems to see a tendency in Figure 5), but I don't think it's
strong enough for reporting (the interaction is not significant either even
without averaging). So I rephrase abstract and conclusion accordingly - I
think we can only say that they are different (given that the phase main
effect is significant). The duration effect holds though - it's more
divergent during training than test; the first two fixations are both long
fixations. I think it's a strong evidence showing different strategies
adopted.

We can talk about it more later. My poster is on Tuesday morning - hope we
will get some useful comments. :)))))

See you soon here,

Janet

to Assist Researchers

Dear Calit2 Affiliated Researcher:

Hi, my name is Nobles Tiki and I work here at Calit2 in the area of
government programs development.

For the last six months, a small team of Calit2 programmers has been
developing a set of Web-based tools to help you identify new federal
funding opportunities, track news affiliated with Calit2 corporate
partners, and identify potential collaborators on the UCSD campus based
on their research strengths.

We are pleased to announce that the Research Intelligence portal is now
ready for use by the Calit2 community.
The URL for the site is http://ri.calit2.net

*Why would you want to use the Research Intelligence portal?*

We believe there are four primary reasons you may wish to use the site.

*1) Federal Grant Information:* Updated daily, the Web site contains a
review of new grants that may be of interest to Calit2-affiliated
faculty. If you see a grant that you are interested in, you can quickly
access the official solicitation, email a summary to a friend, or post
it to a social networking site (del.icio.us or connotea). For those of
you who are interested in doing your own data mining of opportunities,
we also make available a really simple syndication (rss) feed of the raw
grant data -- updated daily -- from all federal solicitations.

*2) Corporate Partner News:* Since its founding in 2000, Calit2 has
received funding from approximately 81 companies. On a daily basis we
aggregate stories of relevance to Calit2 and add them to our industry
news page. We have also created company profiles that allow you to
quickly see a "heads-up display" on our partners, corporate links, and
breaking news.

*3) Research Strengths:* Using publicly accessible Web sites, abstracts
of NSF and NIH grants affiliated with Calit2, and some limited
publications, we have used data and text mining techniques to develop
for each researcher a "draft" profile of their research interests.
Clusters of terms from individual researchers were then pulled together
to create a view of the top 50 and top 100 research terms affiliated
with Calit2 UCSD. Clicking on a research keyword allows you to see other
researchers who appear to have interest in this area, and you can drill
down to contact information and a more detailed list of research
strengths for just that individual researcher.

*4) Your Customized Research Intelligence Home:* For each registered,
affiliated researcher we have created a customized Research Intelligence
Home. The power of this page is that it matches your research strengths
against new federal funding opportunities and creates a listing of new
funding customized for you.

We also know that our view of your research strengths may be incorrect
so we have created tools to allow you to add/delete any keyword which is
affiliated with you. Once you think your keywords are correct, you can
also export them to your own web site, or send them to one of two social
book-marking sites.

Our metric for success will be how many users establish logins, edit
their keywords, and find new funding opportunities based on these.

*Feedback/Comments*

We are "hungry" for feedback on the site: what works, what is confusing,
what is missing, what additional features would you like to see? You
should feel free to email me directly your thoughts at nobles@ucsd.edu or
you can use the blog tab on the site to drop us a note on a bug or
feature development you would like to see.

We also have additional tools under development and we're looking for
"alpha" users to give these new features a test drive. One of the most
promising: a tool that allows registered users to directly upload any
web page, Word or PDF document, and have keywords suggested that can be
directly added to your profile.

We greatly appreciate your assistance and hope that this site is useful
for you.

Sincerely,
Nobles Tiki

Very likely you received this email already. This is not a typical

depending upon which collaborative efforts come up, CalIT2 has
resources and active personnel to take care of the logistics and team
