Hi everyone -

Sorry for the overly-wide distribution of this email. If you
are coming to the tdlc site visit, however, you need to
read this. I also have specific questions:
Howard Smith - is the poster you have listed separate
from Nick's demo of Let's Face It?
Kali Quinn - are you presenting a poster that is separate
from Bettie Johnson's? Or are you just giving the 5 minute
presentation during the ed/outreach section?

We will be having a practice poster session for Monday's
site visit THIS AFTERNOON (Friday, April 27th).
[See below if you are non-local, and keep reading even if you
*aren't* presenting a poster!] We will also be having a
practice talk session on Sunday 1:30-4:30 at the
site visit site, the Institute of the Americas.
http://www.iamericas.org/background/directions.html

Please set up your poster in the hallways of the Natural
Computation and INC labs, which are in the Chemistry
Research Building Map: http://tinyurl.com/ysuxd4
There will be easels and backing and glue if you haven't
"stiffened" your poster yet. Some are still likely to go on
the wall, but don't attach your poster to the wall unless
Jane Doe tells you that's where it goes. She is the
Poster Czar, and is planning the location allocation for the
posters - she should be around by 2PM(?) time to direct you.
They are being grouped by initiative/strand.

Please assemble in COGS 003 at 4:30PM for an initial
15-20 minute briefing on the private meeting with the site
visitors. We will talk about what kinds of questions they are
likely to ask, and how to handle them. I have attached a
copy of our SIP, and it would be helpful if you could read enough
of it to figure out your place in our world, and get a somewhat
bigger picture than you might now have.

After this, we will move over to the Chemistry Research Building
and the Natural Computation Lab for the practice poster session.

If you are reading this and you are coming from out of town, we
will give you a chance to set up your poster on Sunday afternoon.
We are meeting at the Institute of the Americas between 1:30
and 4:30 to practice the talks. The poster venue is a short
walk from there.

Attached is a preliminary list of posters.
Attached also is a schedule for the site visit.

cheers,
gary and jane

People For the American Way
April 27, 2007
________________________________________________________________

Dear Garrison,=20

Last week, the Supreme Court issued a 5-4 decision in Gonzales
v=2E Carhart upholding a federal abortion ban with no exception to
protect a woman's health=2E As Justice Ginsburg noted in her
dissent, the decision is an alarming sign that the right-wing
bloc on the Court is ready to roll back decades of precedents
protecting Americans' lives and liberties=2E The 2008 election may
be our last chance to stop them in a generation=2E That's why
we're writing to you today=2E
=20
5-4 rulings are getting to be the norm with this Court -
rulings that affect our lives, our rights, our environment=2E
Justice Anthony Kennedy has replaced Sandra Day O'Connor as the
(more conservative) swing vote, too often siding with hard-right
Justices Scalia, Thomas, Alito and Chief Justice Roberts=2E But
things could definitely get worse, and we can't let that happen=2E
=20
President Bush's nominees have strengthened the power of the
Court's far-right ideologues, as recent rulings have shown=2E
Fortunately, Democrats re-gained the Senate majority in 2006,
and that has slowed the President's efforts to pack the federal
courts with judges eager to roll back the clock on our rights=2E
But Democrats have the smallest majority possible=2E We need to
build a bigger, more progressive Senate majority to protect the
Supreme Court and the lower federal courts against future right-
wing nominees=2E
=20
People For the American Way Voters Alliance is already working
to keep the decision of who sits on the Court out of the Far
Right's hands=2E This means taking back the White House and
expanding the Democratic majority in the Senate=2E
=20
You want your political donations to make an impact? Check out
the political return that PFAW Voters Alliance can offer you on
your investment=2E
=20
In 2006, with less than three weeks until Election Day, PFAW
Voters Alliance teamed up with a partner to place ads on
progressive radio=2E The ads, "50 reasons to Elect a Democratic
Congress," featured 60 second spots read by people like Bobby
Kennedy, Jr=2E, Kathleen Turner, Peter Coyote, and Ambassador
Joseph Wilson=2E The cost: $25,000=2E The result: $232,468 in
donations to candidates in key races around the country in the
crucial last days before the election, including $38,293 to now-
Senator Jim Webb (VA) and $36,996 to now-Senator Claire
McCaskill (MO) - both extremely close races, both victories that
contributed to the Democrats taking back the Senate=2E
=20
Now PFAW Voters Alliance is gearing up to help progressive
candidates in 2008=2E The Voters Alliance political action
committee (PAC) has the power to amplify your contribution and
get critical resources to the Senate races that need them most=2E

http://www=2Ekintera=2Eorg/site/lookup=2Easp?c=3DjsJRJ0OSF&b=3D2705959 =
=20
=20
Please make a donation to the PFAW Voters Alliance TODAY so it
can:

 - Research the candidates and the races that you need to know
about - and get that information to you and other potential
donors =2E

 - Reach those donors through print, radio and electronic ads
to let them know which candidates will protect the courts - and
make it easy to contribute=2E

 - Staff online campaigns to support progressive Senate
candidates=2E

 - Mobilize PFAW members in the states where key races are
taking place=2E=20

http://www=2Ekintera=2Eorg/site/lookup=2Easp?c=3DjsJRJ0OSF&b=3D2705959 =
=20

The $38,293 raised for Jim Webb in 2006 came from 2,515 donors -
that's an average donation of just over $15! The power of the
Voters Alliance is not reaching out to large donors, it's
getting a lot of individuals the information they need to make
effective political decisions=2E That's where YOUR help is needed=2E
=20
Because you are a member of PFAW, we can have this candid
conversation with you=2E There is no doubt PFAW Voters Alliance
made a difference in many of the Democratic gains in 2006, but
we need you to repeat or expand that success for 2008=2E =20
=20
Please help us get the ball rolling with a donation of $50,
$100, $200 or whatever you can give TODAY=2E

http://www=2Ekintera=2Eorg/site/lookup=2Easp?c=3DjsJRJ0OSF&b=3D2705959 =
=20
=20
Just do the math=2E This is a true investment in progressive
electoral gains that will be maximized and multiplied several
times over=2E=20
=20
Don't make the mistake of thinking 2008 is a long way off=2E
Electing a President and Senate that will protect the Supreme
Court from more damaging right-wing Justices is a priceless
investment in our future, and we need to start now=2E
=20
Thank you for your membership, your support and your
willingness to fund our critical efforts to take back the courts
by electing progressive candidates=2E

Hi Paula -

I also asked about changing the schedule on the web for site visit to
the actual one, and making the directions to the site visit link more
specific?

Hi,
NSF wants a represenation/sampling of the range of work. We cannot afford
to bring Sean out. Thus, NSF will have to muddle through the poster - with
any help that Bettie is willing to give. Having her help (but not present
the poster)could demonstrate network communication and coherence.

She should not feel responsible for presenting - but putting it on the
wall and assisting if possible

Thanks,
A

Dear MoveOn member,

Congress is about to send an important bill to the White House--it would
require the president to start bringing our troops home from Iraq this
year. President Bush has said repeatedly he's going to veto it. It's
outrageous. Most Americans support a timeline and he's standing in the
way.

This will be a pivotal moment on Iraq--it's not clear what Congress or the
president will do after the veto. We need to make clear that President
Bush is really vetoing the will of the American people. And we need to
tell Congress to hold firm.

There are already more than 200 rallies planned and it's really important
to turn out in big numbers to get our message across. There is one right
near you in San Diego. Can you make it tomorrow?

Here are the details:

Four years ago today, President Bush declared "Mission Accomplished" in
Iraq. Now there is a plan on the table that will finally start bringing
our troops home--but the president is going to veto it. By doing so, he's
vetoing the will of the people.

Congress has two options on how to respond--they can either cave to the
president's pressure or stand strong and demand accountability from him on
Iraq. Members of Congress are going to be gauging public reaction in the
next few days to decide which path they'll follow.

There's also a fun twist to these rallies: We'll be using noisemakers to
demonstrate that President Bush and Congress cannot ignore us any
longer--our voices must be heard.

As Senator Feingold recently wrote:

By carrying out his veto threat, the President will mark yet another sad
day in the history of this war. But that veto should be seen as a rallying
cry for the vast majority of Americans who believe that the time has come
to again stand up, and stand together, with one voice, and demand a policy
that makes sense--one that puts our country and our national security
first. A policy that makes America safer, not weaker.2

Now is the time to take a strong stand against the president's reckless
policy in Iraq. Together, we'll show the media and Congress that we won't
stand for another blank check for the president on the war. Can you join
us?

 Dear MoveOn member,
<p>Congress is about to send an important bill to the White House&#8212;it would
require the president to start bringing our troops home from Iraq this year. President
Bush has said repeatedly he's going to veto it. It's outrageous. Most Americans support
a timeline and he's standing in the way.</p>

<p>This will be a pivotal moment on Iraq&#8212;it's not clear what Congress or the
president will do after the veto. We need
to make clear that President Bush is really vetoing the will of the
American people. And we need to tell Congress to hold firm.</p>

<p>There are already more than 200 rallies planned and it's really important to turn
out in big numbers to get our message across. <span style="font-weight: bold;">There
is one right near you in San Diego</span><event><span style="font-weight: bold;">. Can
you make it tomorrow?</span>
</event></p>

<p>Here are the details:<br>
<span style="font-weight: bold;">Balboa Park Naval Hospital

<p>

you:</p>

<p style="overflow: hidden;"><a href="http://pol.moveon.org/event/vetorally/?search_zip=92122&id=10263-3631544-DbYlaG&t=5">http://pol.moveon.org/event/vetorally/?search_zip=92122&id=10263-3631544-DbYlaG&t=5</a></p>

<p>Four years ago today, President Bush declared &quot;Mission Accomplished&quot;
in Iraq. Now there is a plan on the table that will finally start bringing our troops
home&#8212;but the president is going to veto it. By doing so, he's vetoing the will
of the people.</p>

<p>Congress has two options on how to respond&#8212;they can either cave to the president's
pressure or stand strong and demand accountability from him on Iraq. Members of Congress
are going to be gauging public reaction in the next few days to decide which path
they'll follow.</p>

<p>There's also a fun twist to these rallies: We'll be using noisemakers to demonstrate
that President Bush and Congress cannot ignore us any longer&#8212;our voices must
be heard.</p>

<p>As Senator Feingold recently wrote:</p>

<div style="margin-left: 40px; font-style: italic;">
<p>By carrying out his veto threat, the President will mark yet another sad day in
the history of this war. But that veto should be seen as a rallying cry for the vast
majority of Americans who believe that the time has come to again stand up, and stand
together, with one voice, and demand a policy that makes sense&#8212;one that puts
our country and our national security first. A policy that makes America safer, not
weaker.2</p>
</div>
<p>Now is the time to take a strong stand against the president's reckless policy
in Iraq. Together, we'll show the media and Congress that we won't stand for another
blank check for the president on the war. Can you join us?</p>

<p>Click below to search for a rally near you.</p>

Gary,
No Regents Pizza -- it is UCSD Catering -- sorry :-( Glenda chose the
menu but she did put veggie on the list..

There will be no easels due to space issues-- the posters will have to
be adhered to the wall etc..

I will send this out in a few minutes..
Paula

Hi Paula -

We want to tell all the students about the practice poster session,
the pizza (please get Regent's!), and that they should set up their
posters in advance. We will need Glenda to deliver poster backing,
easels, and glue beforehand.

I think only you can get all of the email addresses out of the
database -
none of the rest of us have access to it. I will send a message to
the ones I can find - but I am afraid I will miss some people, so if
you could follow up with the complete list, that would be really
appreciated! By the way, this will obviously only be useful for
UCSD students, but we will need to do a followup on Sunday
for students from out of town.

cheers,
g.
PS Here is what I will try to send, please copy and paste into
your message:

Dear poster presenter,

We will be having a practice poster session for Monday's
site visit THIS AFTERNOON. Please set up your poster
in the hallways of the Natural Computation and INC labs -
there will be easels and backing and glue if you haven't
"stiffened" your poster yet. Some are still likely to go on the
wall, but don't attach your poster to the wall unless Jane
Doe tells you that's where it goes. She is the Poster Czar,
and is planning the location allocation for the posters - she
should be around by 2PM(?) time to direct you. They are being
grouped by initiative/strand.

Please assemble in COGS 003 at 4:30PM for an initial
15-20 minute briefing on the private meeting with the site
visitors. We will talk about what kinds of questions they are
likely to ask, and how to handle them.

The poster venue is a short
walk from there.

cheers,
gary and jane
